Charlotte Quilter’s Guild Quilt Show

We will be vending at the following show, please come out and see us there.

The Charlotte Quilters’ Guild 2012 Quilt Show “Reach Out!”. It will be held at the Metrolina Tradeshow Expo located at 7100 Statesville Road, Charlotte, NC 28269. This is accessed easily from both I-77 and I-85. The show dates and hours are March 9 – 10, from 9 am – 5 pm each day. The admission will be $6 and you can download a $1 off coupon (one per entrant) from the show site at www.charlottequiltersguild.org/quiltshows.html . This new venue is 20,000 square feet with plenty of free parking and a large food concession. The show will have over 250 traditional, contemporary and art quilts, a silent auction, a guild boutique, raffle quilts, a raffle sewing machine, demos, door prizes and fun and inspiration for all. And, for your shopping pleasure the following vendors with their wares will be there:

Auntie Ju’s Quilt Shoppe, will have punch needle supplies, quilt kits, hand dyed woolens, patterns and books.

Dawn’s Sewing & Embroidery, will have quilt kits, fabric by the yard, jelly rolls, notions and more.

Elaine’s Attic will have kits, fabric, patterns and notions.

Featherweight Poppy will have Singer Featherweights & parts for sale and will offer service for your Featherweights during the show.
Empty Pockets Alpaca Farm will offer yarns from their own alpacas, as well as alpaca wearables- hats, gloves, socks and shawls. They might even be doing some spinning!
Goneaway Quilting is offering her hand dyed fabrics, her pattern line, kits, notions and her quilting service.
Hmong Pandau will have pandau pieces for sale: mini quilts, purses, eyeglass cases etc.
Judy Lea Enterprizes will have her contemporary fabrics, silk, embellishments & artist papers.
LCM Enterprise is bringing quilt display furniture – ladders, end tables, ruler racks etc.
Local Colour Hues will have her lovely hand dyed fabric and kits, along with some wool roving for felting and knitting.
Marula Imports is bringing her 100% cotton fabrics from Africa!
Quilter’s Gallery – those pizza girls, will have their pizzas, patterns, templates & rulers as well as fabrics.

New French General has arrived.

New French General, Rouenneries Deux, has arrived. This is always a popular fabric group from Moda. Very traditional in feel. The prints are actual reprints of old French fabrics from the 18th century. Nice old pinky reds, pinky beiges and taupe. They look just like the fabrics that you see in European flea markets. $10.95 per yard. Carolina One Stop Shop Hop

The 6th Annual Carolina One Stop Shop Hop is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. Hours are 9am – 4pm. $2.00 admission.

This is always a fun show. These are the guys that started the “shopping in one place” idea in this area. There will be 20 vendors and since it’s just one day, there is a lot of activity and energy to share. Fiber arts, threads, notions, tons of fabric, embellishments, buttons, vintage linens, baked goods and lots of creative ideas.

Our Quilting Class in March

March 24, 2012 – Off Track

Saturday, March 24, 2012 – 10am – 4 pm

Our March class is an easy design, Off Track by Cluck, Cluck, Sew.

It is our goal this year to inspire you to sew. We are going to offer a variety of classes. Some of the classes will feature designs that are very fast. (This one is super fast.) Some of the classes will feature designs with which you can use a variety of fabrics so that you can use your stash. (This one is a great stash buster.) Some classes will teach techniques. Some will teach a different shape from squares or triangles. This class teaches basic strip sewing. If you have never taken a class with us before, or were a bit intimidated by the whole quilting process, this is an excellent quilt to start with. Come and join us for your first quilting class. We will start with techniques like rotary cutting and an accurate seam allowance. For you more advanced sewers, you will love the boldness of this design and the ease of construction. Yardages are included in the pattern for throw, twin or queen/king size. This is one of the easiest quilts I’ve ever seen to make any size you desire.

This is my sample quilt for the class. It is throw size. 58? x 63?. I used a lot of bright pieces of fabrics out of my stash. I used a mix of backgrounds, but you could use just one color for more contrast. This quilt uses 2 1/2 ” strips so it is perfect for a jelly roll if you have one. It would be fabulous out of batiks. You could use 30?s prints and muslin. You could even use flamingo fabric if you were so inclined. Look at your stash and select a variety of darks and then some light fabrics for your backgrounds. If you cut your strips before class, then you will have made a lot of progress by the end of class. If you need help cutting, then we can cover that in class.

Keeping with the strip theme, I’ll demo my version of Pop Stars from Material Obsession 2 by Kathy Doughty and Sarah Fielke ($27.50) in the afternoon. I love the ideas in this book. This is a string pieced quilt. It uses a lot of scrap fabrics and a different shape, a kite shape. You should see the mess on my dining room table. (I went crazy last summer and went through all my boxes of fabric and got rid of all the little strips that were left over from cutting various projects from the past 25 years, because life was too short to sit around and flip and sew little strips.) Now I am addicted to the possibilities of string quilting. It is beautiful and fairly thoughtless. Not exacting in any way. You get to use up the smallest of scraps. Remember – I’ve always told you that making a scrap quilt was the same thing as cleaning house. I am wishing that I had all those scraps back. But life is too short for regret. So just buy some more fabric. I’ve been having so much fun that I thought “I’ll write a book filled with beautiful string-pieced quilts”. Imagine my disappointment when I realized that Edyta Sitar had written such a book –Friendship Strips and Scraps. ($27.95) She even ENCOURAGES you to share strips with your friends. Now, don’t get any ideas. I’ve got enough strips of my own. You’ll see more of the quilts out of this book as the year goes on. This is going to be the year to cut it up and use it up.

The base cost for the class is $35.00, if you already have the pattern. If you need the pattern, please send $45.00 and we will mail you your pattern ahead of time so that you can do your cutting before class. Class starts at 10 am and finishes about 4 pm. The classes will be held at Cool Spring Methodist Church, 1902 Mocksville Rd, Cleveland, NC—that is Hwy. 64 about 8 miles East of Statesville, and is easily accessible from either I-77 or I-40.

As you know, eating lunch is an important part of the day. You bring a sandwich and we’ll provide sides, chips, desert and tea.

Payment is required at the time of registration to hold your space in the class. A supply list and directions to the venue will be emailed to you upon registration.

January has been a busy month for us. Early in January was our Quilting and Fiber Art Marketplace show in Sanford, NC. Then we went to Myrtle Beach Quilt Party to teach and to vend. Then this last weekend we had our Quilting and Needle Art Extravaganza in Statesville, NC. We had over 2000 people attend. Thank you, thank you for all your support. We couldn’t do it without you. You have kept us in business for a long time and I continue to be appreciative of your support.

Just one more reminder that this Friday and Saturday is the QNAE at the Statesville Civic Center, 9 am – 5 pm. It is easily accessible from either I-40 or I-77 so join us for a day of shopping with 37 of the best quilt, yarn and sewing specialty shops around. Not only do we have the best shops we will also have great food and snacks. Apple or blueberry biscuits for early in the day or to take home. Risto’s will have several options for lunch. The menu will have turkey and cranberry sandwiches with pasta salad, roast beef with horseradish, caramelized onions, arugula and homemade chips, or roasted veggie wrap. There will be a soup selection also.

The Food at the Quilting and Needle Art Extravaganza is the best!

Usually when you go to a “show”, you have the option of some kind of carnival food, hot dogs, little pizzas or something like that. We have tried to make food part of the experience at the QNAE. Lunch is served by Sheryl Toukola at Risto’s Restaurant. (formerly Mayo”s Restaurant) Risto’s is located at 123 North Center St. in Statesville, but for our event, she will be in the back of the Civic Center serving wonderful sandwiches and salads. The kind of food that women like. She starts from scratch. She serves wonderful breads, salads with cranberries and nuts, and lots of other little extras that let you know a “foodie” has just prepared your lunch. Shop for a while, get a bite to eat with Sheryl and then go and visit the BAKERY.

Shewnee Johnson always has a bakery selection that makes my mouth water. Last year they had a coconut pound cake that was to die for! For breakfast this year, she is making blueberry and apple biscuits. They will be so warm that they will melt in your mouth. She is also featuring Sweet Potato Sonker. I don’t know what it is, but it sounds Southern, sweet and delicious.
