Getting ready for the Raleigh Show

Hello Quilters,
What a beautiful week tis has been.  We’ve enjoyed the warm temps and all the beautiful flowers.

This is the quilt we are making in March.  I’m calling it “Right Hand and Left Hand”.
You will find out why when you come to class.

Hello Everyone,
We had a great time at the Charlotte Quilter’s Guild Show last weekend.  We saw a lot of old friends.  Can you believe we closed our shop in 2006?  How time flies.  Congratulations to all the ribbon winners.
Make plans to see us in Raleigh next Friday and Saturday.
Recipes
Everyone enjoyed the recipes at Christmas. Most of these recipes are from my Grandma’s church cookbook from the 1960s. I had a conversation with a customer at the show about old recipes.
She requested a chow chow recipe.  Here you go.

Uncooked Vegetable Relish

1 large head of cabbage, chopped fine.
6 to 8 onions
8 sweet red peppers (part green is ok)
1/4 cup white mustard seed
2 cups of sugar
1 Tbsp.celery seed
vinegar to cover mixture
3/4 cup of salt
Mix vegetables and add salt.  Put in bowl and let stand overnight.  Next morning, squeeze out the juice and discard.  Add mustard seed, sugar and celery seed. Cover with vinegar. More sugar may be added to suit taste. Can in pint jars.  Makes 4 to 6 pins.  Seal.

Classes

Our class dates for March are Friday, March 24 or Saturday, March 25, 2023. We are doing something a little different.  Stash Busters is going to be a series of quilts that are fairly simple to make.  They are designed to use up all the random fabrics that are in your stash.  Experienced quilters will be able to knock out a quilt top in no time.  Beginners will feel comfortable taking the class.  While others are sewing, we will spend time with you on basic skills like cutting, rulers, and sewing basics.  Maybe you have a friend that wants to quilt but other classes have been too advanced.  Stash Busters will be something you can do together. Maybe you even have enough fabric in your stash that your friend could help you reduce your stash  by making a small quilt. This was easy to make, and I think it turned out to be a nice “quilty” looking quilt.  I used all my leftover French General reds for the squares and a light robin’s egg blue for the stripping.

REMEMBER TO BRING SOMETHING FOR “SHOW AND TELL”.

Class starts at 10 am and finishes about 4 pm but we’ll have the building open at 9:00 am so plan to arrive in time to have a cup of coffee and set up, so we’ll be ready to start at 10:00 am.  The class will be held at Cool Spring Church, 1902 Mocksville Rd, Cleveland, NC—that is Hwy. 64 about 8 miles East of Statesville, and is easily accessible from either I-77 or I-40.

As you know, eating lunch is an important part of the day.  Bring a sandwich, or your favorite recipe, and we’ll provide sides, chips, desert and tea.  Quilters are good cooks too so there is always plenty to share.

To register for the class, call or text Cindy Page, 704-376-2531 to reserve your space, then mail checks payable to The Quilter’s Gallery to 224 Woodleaf Road, Cleveland, NC 27013.   Payment is required at the time of registration to hold your space in the class. A supply list with directions to the venue will be emailed to you upon registration.

Quilt Guilds

Have you ever googled your quilt guild?  Each year as we prepare for the shows, we try to mail out complimentary show tickets.  We think it’s fun for you and it’s a good way for us to spread the news about the shows.  Some guilds are easy to reach.  They have websites and PO Boxes.  However, some of you are the best kept secrets in the whole quilting world.  Take a look at your website.  Is there a “snail mail” address anywhere?  Or a contact person?  Should we send mail to the address of the location where you meet?  Sometimes we get tired of looking and just skip over you.  Google “quilt guilds in NC”.  A couple of sites will come up with an extensive list of guilds.  Is the info about your guild current?

Here are some of the guilds that we could not find online or their envelope was returned.  If you have any information about these guilds, are they still active?  Have they disbanded? Please let us know.
